One of the better rivalries of last season is set to renew this weekend when the Cincinnati Reds travel to St. Louis to play the Cardinals.

The Cardinals are at 20-1 to win the World Series in MLB Betting.

During their intense division race last year, the Reds and Cardinals played several very competitive games towards the end of the regular season. One game got so intense that there was a brawl between the two teams when St. Louis catcher Jadier Molina got into a fight with Reds’ second baseman Brandon Phillips. After the brawl, words were exchanged between the two clubs and there is certainly no love lost between these teams.

Both teams have gotten off to a decent start this season with both Cincinnati and St. Louis currently among the leaders atop the NL Central division. With everyone else in the National League Central Division within three games of each other, no one has separated themselves from the rest of the pack as the early team to beat in 2011.

Perhaps the best part of this upcoming series between Cincinnati and St. Louis is the expected pitching match ups. Saturday will see Travis Wood take the hill opposite Chris Carpenter. Sunday, which is also the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball Game of the Week, will showcase Sam LeCure against Jake Westbrook. If you are a baseball fan that appreciates good pitching, this is a series you might want to tune into.

Cincinnati Reds – History – MLB

As charter member of the American Association (AA) in 1882, the Cincinnati Reds began play. Then they were known as the Cincinnati Red Stockings.

The first team fully encompassed of pros in 1866, the Red Stockings was formed.

The Cincinnati Reds as we know them now were the third team to play in Cincinnati as the Red Stockings. A second Red Stockings team in 1880 was a charter member of the NL but it was expelled. In the American Association, the third Cincinnati Red Stockings team played its first eight years.

The Reds in 1919 won their first NL pennant. In 1919 World Series, the infamous series, they defeated the Chicago White Sox and increased their MLB odds by notches.

When it was revealed that purposely the White Sox had thrown the World Series in a gambling scheme, it dulled the excitement over the 1919 World Series to an extent.

They captured another NL pennant after 20 years and another World Series after 21 years. As NL Champions, Cincinnati repeated it in 1940.

The nickname “Redlegs” was adopted by Cincinanati in 1953 and remained the same until 1958 when they back to being the Reds.

After winning the 1940 World Series, in franchise history (35 years), the Reds, MLB lines star, would go on their longest World Series drought.

The Cincinnati Reds during the 70’s, came the best stretch, when they were known as “The Big Red Machine.”

The NL Pennant was won again in 1972 but in an exciting seven-game series, they lost to the Oakland Athletics.

The years 1975 and 1976, with back-to-back World Series wins, is regarded as the best for the Big Red Machine.

Red Sox Carlton Fisk’s famous 12th inning shot made the 1975 World Series memorable one, when the 12th inning shot hit the foul pole that forced a game 7. Cincinnati, in 1976, won on an RBI single by second baseman Joe Morgan in game 7.

The unheralded Reds surprised the major leagues by leading the NL from wire-to-wire, under the new manager Lou Piniella in 1990. The franchise got their fifth World Series b them.

Yankees and Tigers Showdown in Comerica: MLB series preview

For the first time this season at Comerica Park, the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers will be meeting each other. By winning their ninth out of tenth series to open up the year, the Yankees look to continue their hot streak to the season. After Detroit faces Cleveland, they will be looking to beat the Yankees since they were swept by the Twins at Target Field.

Yankees will send struggling Javier Vazquez to the mound to face a resurgent Dontrelle Willis, on Monday. He allowed three home runs in three innings, in his last start against the White Sox. Willis is trying to build on his last start where he got his first victory in over a year.

The probable starter for the Yankees is Andy Pettitte, on Tuesday but he came out of the game Wednesday due to some tightness in his arm. Joe Girardi will make a decision closer to the game and has listed him day to day. Pettitte has been tremendous this year with a 4-0 record and an ERA under 2.10. Rick Porcello, who is struggling so far in his second year with a 2-3 record and an ERA over 7, Detroit will send him to the mound. He will look to bounce back.

The Yankees probable pitcher is Phil Hughes, the finale of the series. So far this season, Hughes has been impressive. He is 3-0 with a 1.44 ERA. Veteran Jeremy Bonderman, who is 1-1 with an ERA over 5, will be sent by Detroit.

Both teams are built similarly and it should be a fun series to watch.
